Austin is the state capital of Texas, seat of Travis County and home to the University of Texas at Austin, one of the largest public universities in the United States. Austin officially has the 11th largest population among U.S. cities as of 2013, up from 14th place in 2010.

The mission of the City of Austin Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) is to serve as the coordinating focal point for preparedness, response, recovery, and education in any emergency or disaster that disrupts the community.
